Publication of “Social Media for Change” by Alexander Mäkelä

Brussels – February 4, 2019 – The Good Lobby announces the release of “Social Media for Change”, an open access tool-kit authored by Alexander Mäkelä, a former Facebook public policy associate based in Brussels, on how to use social media responsibly and effectively.

The how-to-guide covers a range of tools, resources and social media best practices to enable political
candidates, campaigners, NGOs, social media managers, and citizens to engage more meaningfully in the lead up to the European Elections and beyond. It is the result of 4 years of experimenting with content creation, working within tech policy and learning from social media veterans. Highlights include:

  • 100+ hyperlinks to online resources, tools, and additional reading material drawn from social media
    companies and industry veterans.
  • Lists of must-have apps for content creation and free alternatives to expensive editing software.
  • Overviews on building and leveraging online communities, establishing effective content creation
processes, and a number of other topics.

“Social media has changed how we consume news and partake in political discussions, yet the political sphere has been slow to adapt. Having gained insights at Facebook and beyond, I want to highlight the tools, tips, and techniques to better communicate with citizens – and to do so for free” says Alexander Mäkelä. The founder of Good Lobby, Professor Alberto Alemanno, welcomes this publication: “In an era of social media distrust, Alexander Mäkelä’s Social media for change unveils how platforms can still be used by political and civil society leaders in an informed, responsible manner to advance the public interest”.

This is the first tool-kit released by The Good Lobby in its efforts at fostering a new generation of active citizen ready to induce systemic change in their communities wherever they are located across the continent and beyond.

“Social Media for Change” will be presented on Friday, February 22 nd at TownHall Europe – The Davignon Centre for New Leadership, located in Square de Meeûs 5-6 in Brussels. In partnership with Friends of Europe, TownHall Europe has engaged in “Funky Fridays” to offer a collaborative space for citizens, today’s and tomorrow’s leaders, and anyone wanting to contribute to a better world.

From 2-4 pm, The Good Lobby and Alexander Mäkelä will run an interactive, skill-based workshop supporting citizens interested in learning the lobby tools available to make meaningful changes in society by also becoming more effective and responsible digital users.
