Since the last September, the European Parliament has been asked to verify whether the European People’s Party and the Alliance of Conservatives and Reformists in Europe might have breached EU law by letting Fidesz and the Law & Justice in their respective EU political parties.
The request has been submitted by The Good Lobby in accordance to Regulation 2018/673, which enables “a group of EU citizens” to directly ask the European Parliament to verify the European Political Parties’ continuing compliance with values on which the EU is founded.
Even though ample evidence has been provided to prove that EPP and ACRE failed to take action against their member parties, the Parliament has refused to act since then, justifying its inaction by pleading its own failure to adapt to its own rules of procedure.
That’s why, with the pro bono assistance of Professors Alberto Alemanno and Laurent Pech, The Good Lobby turned to the European Ombudsman to open a swift investigation on the European Parliament’s persistent refusal to act.
The stakes are high and the Ombudsman’s investigation could have a huge impact, since both the EPP and ACRE might face de-registration as European Political Parties.
