The Good Lobby proudly welcomes the launch of the new European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) “Justice for Palestine”, officially started on 13 January 2026, calling on the European Union to fully suspend the EU–Israel Association Agreement in response to ongoing serious human rights violations and breaches of international law. At the Brussels launch, The Good Lobby joined campaigners, MEPs, and civil society voices to show support to the ECI. This initiative now enters its signature-collection phase, aiming to mobilise over one million EU citizens to urge the European Commission to act. Why This ECI Matters
The European Citizens’ Initiative is a unique instrument of European participatory democracy, enabling citizens across the Union to invite the European Commission to propose new laws or policies once one million validated signatures are gathered from at least seven Member States. While ECIs have been available since 2012, their potential is still often underrealised – only a small share have reached the signature threshold and even fewer have translated into meaningful EU action. At its best, the ECI is a vehicle for citizens to push for progressive change and to shape the EU’s agenda directly. That is why The Good Lobby strongly supports this initiative: it represents not just a call for accountability on EU foreign policy, but a powerful example of citizens stepping up to demand policies that align with human rights and justice.
Our Commitment to Participatory Democracy
The Good Lobby has long championed ECIs as a vital part of a more democratic, inclusive Europe. Last summer, we co-hosted a high-level hybrid event “How Can European Citizens’ Initiatives Make a Difference for Society?”, bringing together experts, civil society leaders, EU officials and activists to reflect on the ECI’s record, explore barriers to impact, and discuss how to transform citizen mobilisation into real legislative change. Beyond reflection and advocacy, TGL has been actively engaged in supporting citizen-led initiatives. We backed the “Save Your Right, Save Your Flight!”, a Europe-wide campaign defending robust air passenger rights against proposals that would weaken protections for travellers. Professor Alberto Alemanno, founder of The Good Lobby, was among the initiators, amplifying citizens’ voices in EU decision-making.
