The Good Lobby Profs submitted a formal complaint to the European Commission under the Rule of Law Conditionality Regulation, urging immediate action in response to ongoing democratic backsliding in Slovakia under Prime Minister Robert Fico.
Since returning to office in October 2023, the Fico government has introduced a series of rapid and far-reaching legal and institutional reforms. These measures, taken together, are dismantling essential checks and balances in the Slovak democratic system. Among the most troubling developments are the abolition of the Special Prosecutor’s Office, politically driven changes to the judiciary and public broadcasting, and new laws targeting civil society through so-called “foreign agent” labelling.
The complaint argues that these reforms are not isolated incidents, but rather part of a deliberate effort to undermine the rule of law. They pose a direct threat to the integrity of Slovakia’s democratic institutions and to the EU’s financial interests.
Institutions such as the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the European Public Prosecutor’s Office have already raised serious concerns about these developments. The Slovak government’s refusal to address or acknowledge these warnings only reinforces the urgency for EU-level intervention.
The Good Lobby Profs are calling for the Commission to take firm enforcement action against Slovakia, including activation of the Conditionality Regulation, infringement proceedings, and potential Article 7 TEU measures.
