How an exceptional tool is eroding the integrity of EU policymaking
Next week, the EU Parliament is scheduled to vote again on the first major ‘Omnibus’ package of simplification for sustainability reporting and due diligence.
Despite unprecedented political pressure from the EU Council and the Commission to pass this, the Parliament voted against the proposal, with 309 in favour and 318 against.
The new vote is a test case for what remains of the Green Deal, and it also raises key legal questions that many have puzzled over for some time now. Those are at the centre of the pending inquiry of the EU Ombudsman, including the absence of an Impact Assessment and of a proper public consultation, a record-short 24-hour Inter Service Consultation, that may affect the legality not only of this Omnibus, but also of the ensuing Omnibuses and the underlying legislative technique used and procedures followed.
Professor Alemanno will provide the “legal” perspective on the webinar’s panel, which will also feature other speakers, including Quentin Mautray from ClientEarth and author of the complaint to the EU Ombudsman and former MEP Sophie in ’t Veld.
